St Gregory’s Colour Run raises £4,000
There was a vibrant explosion of colour, laughter and community spirit at St Gregory’s Catholic Primary School in South Shields, as pupils, families, staff and volunteers united for a memorable Colour Run celebration.
The school grounds were transformed into a sea of bright colours and smiling faces, reflecting the strong sense of belonging at the heart of St Gregory’s community.
From the moment the starting whistle blew, pupils of all ages embraced the challenge with enthusiasm. Running, walking and cheering one another on around the course, they were surrounded by clouds of colourful powder that added fun and excitement to every lap.
Designed to be fully inclusive and accessible, the activity at the school, which is part of Bishop Chadwick Catholic Education Trust, ensured that every child could take part, celebrate their achievements and enjoy the experience alongside their friends. The children demonstrated teamwork, resilience and perseverance as they completed the course.
Parents and carers lined the route, offering encouragement and applause, while staff and volunteers worked tirelessly behind the scenes to organise activities, distribute colours and ensure the event ran smoothly.
The event was also a fundraising success, raising £4,000 for the school. Thanks to the generosity of families, friends and the wider community, the funds will support future enrichment opportunities, resources and activities that support pupils’ confidence, resilience and independence.
Headteacher Miss Emma Shaughnessy said: “Rooted in our Catholic mission, St Gregory’s encourages pupils to recognise their unique gifts and talents and use them in service of others.
“This colourful celebration reflected those values, showcasing a school community where kindness, encouragement and respect help every child participate, belong and flourish.”
Parents praised the event, with one describing how such activities “bring so much joy to the children,” while another described the school as a nurturing environment where children “thrive”. Families also appreciated the “lovely opportunities to be involved with the children” and the balance between fun, learning and wider experiences.
Tracey Watson, who will take up the role of deputy headteacher in the new academic year, said: “Events like this help children grow in confidence, support one another and celebrate their unique gifts and talents. It was wonderful to see so many pupils embracing the experience with enthusiasm and joy.”
Miss Shaughnessy added: “Personal development is a key part of life at St Gregory’s. This colourful challenge gave children the chance to build resilience, confidence and teamwork in a fun and memorable way. It was fantastic to see pupils encouraging one another, stepping outside their comfort zones and taking pride in their achievements.
“At St Gregory’s, we want every child to feel known, valued and proud to belong. The Colour Run was about so much more than fundraising; it was about joy, friendship, wellbeing and celebrating what makes our school family so special, while encouraging healthy lifestyles and a strong sense of belonging. Events like this play an important role in helping every child feel included, valued and proud of their school.”
