Jarrow schoolboy wins competition with his design for a sign language translator
A nine-year-old boy from Jarrow has won an award for designing a sign language translator. Joel Hunt, a Year 4 pupil at St Mary’s Catholic Primary School, which is part of Bishop Chadwick Catholic Education Trust, entered the competition as part of the school’s MADD STEM week.

An extraordinary piece of local history has been uncovered at a County Durham primary school, during construction of its new nursery building. While carrying out groundworks, builders revealed a hidden WW2 air raid shelter, preserved beneath the foundations for more than 80 years.
