A Sunderland student has won a national competition with her eye-catching book token design.

Maya Hughes drew her ‘Choose Your Adventure’ design for an internal book token design competition at St Anthony’s Girls’ Catholic Academy, which is part of Bishop Chadwick Catholic Education Trust.

The 16-year-old Year 11 student said she is “proud” of her design which her school librarian, Rachel Martin, entered in the National World Book Day Design a National Token competition – winning the competition in the age group 13-16.

“I feel proud and excited to have won the competition,” said Maya. “I enjoyed designing my token.”

The annual nationwide contest encourages children of all ages to share their creativity – and their love for books and reading – by designing their own gift cards. This year’s theme was Choosing to Read.

She won £100 worth of book tokens for herself and £350 of book tokens for the school too.

Rachel Martin, librarian and learning resources manager at St Anthony’s Girls’ Catholic Academy, said: “What an amazing achievement, Maya.

“We are enormously proud of Maya as an academy. As you can see, she has created an incredibly artistic and eye-catching design.”
