The Year 7 and Year 8 girls’ cricket team at St Wilfrid’s RC College in South Shields has made it to the regional final of a cricket festival.
The competition, which was held at Whitburn Cricket Club, involved several schools including two others which are also part of Bishop Chadwick Catholic Education Trust – St Anthony’s Girls’ Catholic Academy in Sunderland and St Joseph’s Catholic Academy in Hebburn, as well as Mortimer Community College, Boldon School, Whitburn Church of England Academy, Argyle House School and St Thomas More Catholic School.
St Wilfrid’s played St Thomas More in the final and beat them to progress to the County Finals. After the Durham County Finals, the two finalists from each age group will be invited to the Regional Finals for the North-east.
Helen Nuttall, PE teacher, said: “There was some excellent cricket played. We are very proud of the students, in both their commitment and their determination to do well. Their performance at the event was amazing and they deserved to win.
“Our Year 10 sports leaders, Jodie Stephensen and Grace Tudor, umpired and coached our successful team. The impact of winning this competition has increased the interest and number of pupils attending cricket sessions both in and out of the school.”
The event was organised by Marsha Davies, head of female participation at Durham Cricket Foundation.
