Boys at a Sunderland secondary school have once again significantly outperformed national averages, achieving exceptional results across the board. At St Aidan’s Catholic Academy, which is part of Bishop Chadwick Catholic Education Trust, 25% of all grades were 9-7 (A*-A) and 40% of all grades were 9-6 (A*-B), significantly surpassing national and local averages. With pupil progress also markedly exceeding expectations, it is evident that this year’s students have bright futures ahead.
Ethan Holden scooped top grades with five grade 9s. “I was nervous waiting for my results however I am relieved with how well I have done. I wouldn’t have achieved the same results at another school,” said Ethan, who is excited about continuing his studies at St Aidan’s and St Anthony’s Sixth Form College. Ethan plans to study Physics, Maths, Further Maths and Chemistry with plans to study Aerospace Engineering or Astrophysics after his A level studies
Hard work paid off for Kendrix Mayamaya, who studied for three hours or more a day for his GCSE exams. He achieved five grade 9s and three grade 8s. “I was surprised with my results, particularly the grade 9s in Maths, History and Geography,” he said. “Teachers have been incredibly helpful with revision.” Kendrix will be studying Maths, Physics and Computer Science a Sixth Form.
Another student, Joshua Ogunbode, achieved three grade 9s and four grade 8s. He is now off to study Maths, Psychology and English at St. Aidan’s and St. Anthony’s Sixth Form. “I am pleased with my results, and really proud of my grade 9 in Maths” he said.
Also celebrating was Ewan Wilson, who achieved five grade 9s and three grade 8s. Now looking forward to studying A levels in Mathematics and Physics at Sixth Form, he said: “I am very happy with my results, my hardwork and has paid off”
Cole Jubb, was also celebrating his success today, “I am really proud of the journey I have been on and I have received amazing support from school which has enabled me to be in this position today”. Cole will be studying Philosophy, Computer Science and Maths at Sixth Form.
Top grades also came to Areeb Quereshi who was incredibly happy with is results particularly his grade 9 in History. Areeb will be studying Physics, Maths and Philosophy at Sixth Form.
Elliot Pugh was over the moon with his results also commenting on how the hard work he has put into is studies has paid off, he is looking forward to going to Sixth Form to study Biology, Maths and Philosophy.

“In addition to these outstanding outcomes it was also pleasing to note that the initial calculations for Progress 8 demonstrate all pupils at St Aidan’s have made outstanding progress from their starting points. 76% of pupils completed the EBACC pathway – a group of seven subjects which keeps young people’s options open for further study and a future career; this is significantly higher than national.”

St. Aidan’s Year 6 open evening is on Tuesday 17 September 2024. St. Aidan’s & St. Anthony’s Sixth Form open evening is on Tuesday 15 October 2024.
