Living simply, sustainably and in solidarity with people living in poverty are the key elements of the LiveSimply Award – and a school in Seaham has showcased all three.

St Mary Magdalen’s Catholic Primary School in Seaham has joined Catholic schools across the UK to focus on finding ways to live simply and sustainably.

It is the latest school belonging to Bishop Chadwick Catholic Education Trust to achieve the prestigious award.

Head boy Joshua Brown, 11, in Year 6, said: “The LiveSimply Award helped us think about how we can look after the Earth and be kind to others every day. I liked taking part in the activities and knowing that our actions could help people and the environment.”

Benjamin Herring, Live Simply co-ordinator and religious education and science lead, said: “We are incredibly proud to have achieved the LiveSimply Award, which reflects the commitment, enthusiasm and compassion of our whole school community.

“Throughout this journey, our pupils took the lead, embracing the challenge of living simply, sustainably and in solidarity with others. They showed great creativity and determination in developing initiatives that encouraged care for our common home and support for those in need.

“This award has been a true community effort. The support from our parents and families was fantastic, helping to bring our projects to life and reinforcing our shared values beyond the school gates.

“We are also deeply grateful to local businesses and our parish community for their encouragement and generosity. In particular, the Ave Maria Group played a significant role in supporting our work and inspiring our pupils through their example of faith in action.

“Achieving the LiveSimply Award is a wonderful milestone, but more importantly it has helped strengthen our commitment to living out these values every day. We look forward to continuing this journey together as a school and wider community.”
