St. Bede’s Catholic Primary and Nursery School, part of Bishop Chadwick Catholic Education Trust, took part in the event staged at the Vertu Motors Arena Newcastle.
After becoming District Champions in March, St. Bede’s represented South Tyneside against the champions of Newcastle, Northumberland, North Tyneside, Sunderland and Gateshead.
The games were closely contested and St. Bede’s players showed a lot of courage to fight back in one game from 6-0 down against Crookhill (Gateshead) to claim an 8-8 draw.
Although the team remained undefeated throughout their games, they took 2nd in their group, narrowly missing out on a place in the Grand Final.
St. Bede’s won the third place play off against Wellfield from North Tyneside to claim the regional bronze medals.
Y3 teacher and coach Brian McVittie said: “I am extremely proud of our team, as there were nearly 150 entered into the competition this season; to remain undefeated and claim third place in the North East region was an amazing effort.”
“The Hoops4health programme has had a positive impact in our school, with lots of boys and girls throughout different year groups choosing to play basketball at playtimes. Meanwhile, several have joined the local basketball club to become more involved in the sport.”
